Naturally unnatural
(2026)
Naturally Unnatural is a biosculptural project by Yasmin Bock. It explores what it means for something or someone to be alien: something familiar yet unfamiliar; something recognizable and foreign; something both natural and unnatural. In order to achieve this, the artist used natural materials and organic shapes in an attempt to create creatures that feel alien.
Over the course of three months various bioplastic experiments were conducted using different materials, ratios and methods. The final sculptures are made from a gelatin base, colored with lemon peel, blueberry powder and blue spirulina. They are composed of multiple organic, conic shells stacked and screwed together to create new colorful forms.
For the exhibition two sculptures and various bioplastic samples in petri dishes were displayed. Over time, humidity and heat slowly warp the shapes, as they fold in on themselves, beginning their process of decay. Future iterations will play more with this possibility of decay, possibly through timelapse or through audience interaction.
